I had a similar thing happen to me - but less disasterous. I was at a shoot with about a dozen guys at a friend’s farm - the friend recently added a “gong”, huge 3” thick, 30” diameter steel plate, free hanging about 100 yards away. Me and my friend and another guy were taking a break and talking, and a guy about 10 yards to the left decided to shoot it with a Dragunov with high velocity AP ammo (no one knew this or we’d have stopped him). We heard “Bang” “Ping” “ZZZZZZZZZ” “WHAP” as the bullet ricocheted off the gong and flew right over me an my friend’s heads, and hit the barn about 10 feet behind us. Based on the height of the bullet, it probably cleared us by a foot, at most.
That is why one of the rules of gun safety is “Know your target and what’s beyond.” I still love shooting steels, but I’ve learned a few things since then. They absolutely have to be the right type of steel (AR500) and positioned correctly (45 deg. down angle).
